Getting Started With Social Media
A PRSA/SENE

Steve Quigley, Boston University PR professor
Steve’s talk was largely geared to his audience, PR practitioners, who are grappling with social media and how to utilize these tools. There’s always something to learn, so I’ve noted a few resources that were mentioned. What I found most interesting is how traditional media instructors are adjusting to this wide new world. The answer, it seems: as best they can. A very engaging speaker who’s figuring how to mesh the old and new.
Real benefit is gathering input real-time

I’m currently sitting in Quigley’s class here at Boston University at the moment. His classes are insightful and innovative. If you’re totally new or even looking to expand your skills, this is the man in the know!
Wow, there are still people not familar with social media, yet? 😉
Indeed, and I think it’s an issue of the evangelists being technical-oriented, so there’s a lot of lingo flying around.
As I’m continually learning, I’d like for this blog to help those who aren’t so adept — in addition to being a forum for higher-level ideas and discussions.
Thanks again; I really value your thoughts and input!
Suzanne
i hope you going to learn fast…
good luck
Is this a book, a paper or a seminar? Sounds right up my street, I just need to know how I can get hold of it
It was a presentation for Public Relations Society of America’s Southeastern New England Chapter.
Steve Quigley is a professor at Boston University; he may be open to send the slides to you:

How do Social Media sites like Digg, Younews.in work?
How social media will help for site promotion?
Thanks a lot for providing the resources here. By the way, you can find some at the files search engine http://rapid4me.com . I’ve checked already. I read a lot of books in PR. I understand that now it is very important to be good at it if you want your company, your plans or projects to work in the best way.
Great overview. Your style of writing is really a joy to read.
Thanks for your question! I’m not familiar with Younews.in
Rather than venture a guess on my own, I wonder if any followers would like to field this one?
Hi there,
Thanks for your question!
The quick answer is: building links, which builds credibility with search engines such as Google. Since link-building is so easy and so easily abused, my take is search engines are beginning to place greater emphasis on user-driven actions, such as time spend on page.
Thus quality content becomes paramount whether it’s placed on landing pages or blogs or articles. Great content is also more likely to get picked up by Digg and related sharing sites, the benefit of which is pure visibility.
Does that answer your question? I’d love to hear other readers’ thoughts and input, so please chime in!
Hope this day is treating you well!
Suzanne

A cardinal rule of effective communication: Cut out the jargon. Thanks for taking the time to contribute!
This is great advice and the subject line is very important indeed – can make all the difference in my opinion. We have had some great results from more “intriguing” subject lines!. A great campaign should of course combine the best in both design and copy writing and agree that the second element nearly always gets overlooked. Good copy can also help improve your chances of running the gauntlet of spam filters – always check copy for “watch” words that may leave e-marketing campaigns foul of firewalls and filters.
Grusse dich!
Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your thoughts. I’m curious what makes the cut for “intriguing” when it comes to headline writing For the sake of all being fair in Search Marketing I understand that you wouldn’t want to be specific.
Care to cast any predictions for what 2010 will bring to Search Marketing?

I didn’t know that some colleges had PR classes? Perhaps its because I never took business classes or related fields when I was in college.
Actually, you’re more likely to find PR classes in the Communications, Journalism, or Mass Media Departments. My master’s alma mater offers a PR track as well at University of South Carolina Columbia.
If you’re interested in public relations, you want to check out Public Relations Society of America.
Do let me know if this information is helpful to you,

That is right.
Predictions for 2010 included that acquisitions will dominate the technology market, causing the strong [corporations] to get stronger; smart energy management will become a key trend; a very social Web will take over in a bigger way; location-based technologies will finally become prominent.
Hi and thanks so much for your supportive comment … easy and informative readin’ that’s the goal!
Hi there,
I agree but question whether tech acquisitions are always a wise move: When do they become unwieldy, resisting innovation and squashing others who are innovating? I suppose one answer is sustaining a strong entrepreneurial environment.
While networking in person, I’ve heard some people say we’re experiencing that now: High unemployment sends the innovators back to their garages.
What’s your take?
Thanks for stimulating the brain!
Suzanne

Is this event being broadcasted or recorded? Any other simillar events will be very interesting in future posts.
No broadcasts but I prefer quick write-ups to webinars and the like … if you can’t be there and ask questions what’s the point? Then again, I’m a text gal, right?
