Google AdWords highlights from Malinda Gagnon

In this era we need to

Give clients something to make campaigns perform better

Companies are looking to do more with less

Clients relying on us more

Measurable results, use marketing dollars more wisely

Do what we’ve always done that much better

Go back to core competencies: search best practices, content best practices

Search Best Practices

Connect audience with the info the audience is seeking: Reach right audience with the right message at the right time

Adgroup best practices

Have your targeted audience see you

Has to be tightly targeted

Keywords, fairly targeted, related to the ad and the service offered

When trying to determine themes, keep in mind

Differentiate products or services you offer
Different levels of services, specify among each
Same product with various phrases or synonyms used

Keyword best practices

Reflect what users are searching for
Create relevant themes of keywords to relate back to specific ad text

Keep in mind

Users who are familiar with what you’re selling
then think about those who are not experts
Avoid the middle of the road (paying for unyielding clicks)

Accurately reflect the services being offered

Use keyword variations to maximize exposure
Use broad, phrase and exact match, as well as negative keywords to weed out unqualifieds

Adtext best practices

Give customers a very clear call to action: They should immediately know what to do next
Reflect your keywords in ad text: Make ads unique so they stand out, see what else is out there and what competitors are doing
Test multiple ad text variations: change word order, diff phrases

Content Best Practices

Content marketing plans: When designing content campaign

Targeting options
CPC vs CPM

Before you start, you should know

Precise audience
Who: age, gender, household, life like, income
Where: do they spend time online
How: can I reach them online
Contextual, placement or category targeted
Message: How do I want my message portrayed
Think about what would grab their attention

Contextual keywords best practices

Duplication across ad themes is good
Use keywords you expect to see on the page
15 keywords are enough to build on that theme
Use negative keywords
Avoid misspellings
Use keywords URLs
Select and relay ad group theme

Best practices for ad copy

Target browsing mentality of the user
Spark interest with asking questions, gimmicky works well: ask questions
Accurately describe what you’re advertising
Explain how your product relates
Interested in investing? Think about an IRA, on an investment site
Test special offers, test emotional messages: 50% vs $50 off

Choose landing page that immediate addresses what they’re interested in

Comments

  1. Thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed and informative article. It has given me a lot of inspiration and I look forward to more like this in the future.

  2. Great summary of the event. Great to hear what those from google think.

  3. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks so much! Having heard a couple Google officials speak, the best information comes from the Q&A portion. Please check back for other SEO event notes, too.

  4. In Google, everything is based on the Quality Score which is a combination of how your ads have been performing over time relative to ads of the competition.Ads with a higher quality score will get surfaced more often and have a dramatically lower required bid minimum. When we drilled into the new Google AdWords account we saw bid minimums that far exceeded the maximum bids that we used previously. So, if your account has no history, you might have to spend extra to establish a good history by bidding high just to get started.

  5. How do you get the search rankings of those top sites? First of all, you have to understand how search engines actually operate. Many people think that each time a search term is entered in the search text box of a search engine, the entire web and all of it’s websites are searched for relevant page content for the search terms they entered. This is just not the case. Search engines systematically scour the internet referencing their own databases as well as gathering content from new websites that have either had their URL submitted to them by that search engine’s “Add a URL” form or by following links that are found on other sites they are “crawling.” Information, specifically text, from the pages scanned by the search engine spiders are then logged into the database of that particular search engine. One key factor here is that the spider stores data that it percieves to be information related to the subject of that page. What actually is stored is based on the formula developed by that search engines programmers and engineers.

  6. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks for the excellent point. I welcome your insights!

  7. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks very much for adding this valuable content and for explaining it so well. Please feel free to contribute anytime!

  8. Higher rankings by search engines facilitate brand awareness. The primary objective behind search engine optimization is thus, to ensure better rankings, and thus, social book marking has emerged as an effective tool for providing back links and getting higher traffic, which in turn help in securing better Search Engine Rankings. Bookmarks represent links through tagging. Unlike a hierarchical structure, tagging is done through a bottom-up method, which create many broad categories to fit in the links. As a result, the users can assert the metadata adding relevance to the links.

  9. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks so much for filling in some of the blanks with a thorough explanation! We’d love to hear more
    -Suzanne

  10. The principle behind the technology is to ensure that as video quality and quantity expand, so does the amount of information that is visible to Google search. They have already worked to ensure their spiders can read Flash, so video is an obvious next step.

  11. Pay per Click is a form of online advertising that revolves around the purchase of sponsored links on the pages of the search engines that display results. Many people think that it is a stop-gap measure that is used in the intervening time before a sustained SEO campaign take effect. However, if used effectively and systematically, Pay per Click can be used for a long period of time and in conjunction with all kinds of internet marketing campaigns.

  12. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Those Google people, always busy upgrading and keeping everyone on their toes. At SMX West in February the panelists were still saying spiders couldn’t read Flash. So this is a recent development? Thanks for sharing!

  13. Good post. The primary objective behind search engine optimization is thus, to ensure better rankings, and thus, social book marking has emerged as an effective tool for providing back links and getting higher traffic, which in turn help in securing better Search Engine Rankings.

Hi there, Thanks for contributing! How about with organic search? I’m wondering how/if AdWords quality score impacts organic search. Would love to hear a number of opinions on this!

  37. Thanks ever so much, very usefull article.

  38. Your article was very helpful to me. I am now starting an ad campaign with adwords for the first time.

  39. What about a sitemap plugin? oh wait that would go against your philosophy that SEO is not needed!

  40. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Hi there,

Sorry if I’m giving the impression that SEO is no longer needed; from what I gather the trick to SEO is providing the content that readers are searching for, which then leads to conversions, no? If readers arrive on a landing page that’s keyword-stuffed, do they buy?

Thanks for your comment and providing an opportunity to clarify,
    Suzanne

  41. Pertamina says:

Thanks for this nice info, it’s so useful for me.

  42. Dynamic titles enables you to utilize a web user’s search query as the title of your ad. For instance, if someone searches for “nonprofit grants,” “Nonprofit Grants” will appear as your ad’s title. This is a great way to make your ad appear relevant to users, especially if you’re promoting something specific.

  43. Thank you so much Sue for sharing the SEMNE event presentation.. It really helps..

  44. Thanks for writing such good blog with explanation. That defiantly help us.i found it very insightful and also very helpful indeed.

  45. hi, this is the first time i visit here, it’s great place. i like it.

  46. When you make a website, the reader (or visitor) has to be very much on your mind. Just as an author must write to his/her audience (after determining who that audience is) so must a website creator decide just who it is they are targeting their message to. There is some excellent advice here. Not only must a designer placate the visitor when they make a website, but they must also pacify the search engines and the search engine marketing Gods. As with anything, it all can be difficult to learn until you grasp the basics. Luckily, there are some sites that help you to make a website and include help every step of the way. If there are further questions, posts like this are must-haves to clear up any confusion.

  47. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Thanks for the tip!

  65. This blog is really great.

  66. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Hi there,

Thanks for your question! The quick answer is that’s part of the secret sauce, right? Meaning, PPC effectiveness is what separates the pros and the amateurs. Thus, this information is hard to come by. From a content perspective, I would consider the following steps.

    1. Determine whether your landing page is answering the searcher’s question. Once people are on your page, they simply won’t hunt and peck through to find the term they’re searching for. I use word search all the time, but most people will not do that.

    2. Conduct a little research. Find that cousin or brother-in-law or whoever who has no problem telling people how it is. Swap a beer for some feedback. Better to hear what someone thinks than to never know.

    3. Find a Meetup or other professional group in your area, such as SEMNE. Often these groups will offer analysis and peer support.

I invite readers to contribute as well, especially those with more of a technical background.

    Hope that helps,
    Suzanne

  137. Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs).[1] Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space.[2] Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as “computers”. The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

  180. I completely agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.

  181. The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.

  182. These articles provide the glow in which we can watch the reality. This is very good one and gives in-depth information. Thanks for this nice article.

  183. Great post! I am just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. Hi and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and concerns. It’s always a challenge when you’re just starting, questioning who’s trustworthy vs those who are pushing their agenda.

While Designated Editor provides content solutions and strategy, I try to keep my blog as objective as possible. That said, when I’m covering conferences and sessions, I target those that make business sense for my business and my interests.

  191. Thanks for this post I’m new to the web and it has proven of great help. Is it too expensive?

  192. hi thanks for sharing! 🙂

  193. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Absolutely depends on how competitive your keywords are, take real estate for example
Boston condos would be pricier than say Raymond NH condos

  217. If its a competitive keyword is it actually worth spending money on Google adwords?

  218. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Excellent point. From what I hear all the low-hanging fruit has been picked. Plus organic gets clicked on more frequently than paid search.

Whether you pick one or the other or do both, it needs to be done well. When searchers click through, they need to immediately see the answer to their question, i.e. their search terms. What has been your experience?

Also, would anyone like to hear or share some best practices?

    Thanks for sparking this discussion!
    Suzanne
