Search is being redefined by mobile, local, social, personal, augmented reality

By a device revolution: Mobile phones

  • Increasing capabilities and ubiquity
  • Have almost human capabilities: ears, eyes, know who, what, where, why

Personalization How can we truly personalize?

Augmented reality Fuse digital to actual world

Localization & personalized search

  • iPhone users using maps 30 percent more than desktop users. No need to ID location.
  • You know where I am, I want sushi

Social circle personalization

  • New: Augment results with friends’ info, say on NZ what did they say/recommend
  • What do my friends think about type of mobile phone I’m investigating

Omnivorous search box: everything you’ve searched

  • Media
  • Photos, video, not just text. 100 billion images added to web every year
  • Image recognition
  • Look by color, size:  Google can understand what’s in the picture
  • Will be able to drag image into the search box
  • Google Goggles: take picture, search conducted from pic. Can take biz cards, add to contact lists
  • Image swirl: Similar to Wonder Wheel, system understands how images relate to each other

Adding greater depth to search

  • Play songs from search results
  • Add more languages, make Google universally accessible, can search and get results in native language

Comments

  1. This is a great list for sure. The only problem i’ve found is that even if you make a honest comment about a post, if the blog owner even thinks you are using the link for seo purposes they like to delete the comment. Especially if you are targeting your keywords instead of leaving a name. What would be great is a list like this with blogs that you know you are allowed to comment on with out getting your link removed.

  2. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks for raising this issue — as with
anything people care about there are at least two sides, which are both
valid (or not), depending on your perspective.

Please allow me to ask 2 questions:

    1. Are you commenting on blogs that are focused on topics where your keywords are relevant?
    2. And, if you’re not willing to put your name behind it, who are you and what do you stand for?

    I’m
sure you can sense my perspective: I very much appreciate readers’
comments, but please don’t bog down this blog talking about interior
design (spam comment posted last night). I value the time each person
invests in coming to this blog. If you want to talk about interior
design, do a little leg work and find the people who care. I’ve done a
lot of home renovations in my past life, but I’m not going to talk
    about it here.

That said, I’d love to hear your response,
whether you agree with me or not. I truly believe we’re all here to
share and learn, so please do reply.

    Thanks, as always, for
taking the time to comment, especially since your point is valid to
perhaps more readers than I realize? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts
    as well.

    Thanks again,
    Suzanne

  3. Prepare your site for WAP (Mobile) Mobile SEO traffic. If your site has a good performance on the World Wide Web

  4. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

A great point, all businesses should be sure their site will display on a handheld device. Don’t deprive people of information. If someone came to your store to ask a question, would you slam the door in his face?

Are you seeing a lot of demand from businesses/clients? It seems in the US merchants are slow to mobile. I was looking for the address to a Marriott, the mobile site came up but was just a landing page. All I wanted was the address, not Marriott global!

  5. Turning business success and expertise into second half significance – without abandoning either.. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time.

  6. Hi,I love reading through your blog, I wanted to leave a little comment to support you and wish you a good continuation. Wishing you the best of luck for all your blogging efforts.

  7. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks so much for commenting, support is always appreciated! Suzanne

  8. Heard about this site from my friend. He pointed me here and told me I’d find what I need. He was right! I got all the questions I had, answered. Didn’t even take long to find it. Love the fact that you made it so easy for people like me. More power

  9. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Hey there, more power indeed. You made my night … be sure to ask questions!!

  10. expertise into second half significance – without abandoning either.. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time.

  11. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Hi there,

Not sure what you mean by plugins ….

  12. i like reading your great post, keep posting!

  13. i think we should have more search engines like google so that people can get information easily at the right time and at the right place, without any tideous work.

  14. I read it

  15. An important note. Just using nofollow doesn’t protect those other pages from being indexed. If there’s any other links pointing at them from anywhere on the web, search engines will follow through to them that way. So if you don’t want them indexed, you need to make use of a meta noindex tag or robots.txt text to specifically block them.

  16. Google tries to be sure agencies are armed and info to sell search marketing (not SEO) so they understand how to grow business. This also a great strategy to promote the development in marketing for all owner.

  17. Google is a useful tool for everyone to get good research. Add more languages, make Google universally accessible, can search and get results in native language.I indeed enjoy using in it.

  18. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Thanks so much!

  19. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Hi and thanks for taking he time to share this critical piece of information. Would you agree with this layman’s analogy:

Much like hanging with the wrong crowd in high school, associating — or being associated with — less respectable websites diminishes your site’s reputation with the search engines.

Is that an oversimplification? Thanks again for highlighting a key factor in SEO!

  20. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Wow, all great points in the comments … thanks so much for taking the time to share!

Curious how you distinguish between SEOs and Search Marketers? Search Engine Optimization focuses on X and Search Marketing’s goal is Y?

    Thanks much!!

  21. This looks absolutely perfect. All these tinny details are made with lot of background knowledge. I like it a lot. Keep on taking action!

  22. I am really looking for question whether the SEO or SEM are related or somewhat different…because the both have the similar concept…thanks Suzanne for given the important points..i have bookmarked you website…please give reply to me as earliest…..

  23. Nice job, it’s a great post. The info is good to know!

  24. I’m going to blog about that…

  25. Very useful info, thank you!

  26. It is for sure if the blog owner think that you are using his/her blog commenting part for seo purpose, they want to delete your links. It is a factor that how relevant comment you are posting or is there any benefit that blog owner can get from your comment.

  27. Hey I agree with all the readers here. You are indeed doing a great job by keeping all of us updated with these refrence materials. Thanks for the quality post.

  28. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

    Hi there,

A great question, and I think I may be guilty of using the two interchangeably … perhaps because SEO seems to be more buzzy. But just took a look at search frequency:

    Global monthly keyword search
    SEO = 9,140,000
    SEM = 16,600,000

    Local monthly keyword search
    SEO= 2,240,000
    SEM = 368,000

So I guess I’m not the only one!

To answer your question, more directly, a quick search brought up fellow Search Engine Marketing New England member and co-founder Jill Whelan, in the Q&A section of High Rankings, site:

SEM stands for “search engine marketing” and SEO stands for “search engine optimization.”

SEM is the all-encompassing broad phrase that includes SEO as well as paid search activities such as Google AdWords purchases.

SEO, on the other hand, is simply a subset of SEM.

    Some
people mistakenly think that SEM = PPC while SEO = organic. SEO does
equal organic, but as you can see by the definition above, SEM does not
    equal JUST paid search.

    Best,

    Jill

  29. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Hi and thanks for taking the time to comment … True. Depends on whether the links are relevant. Gucci bags and the dozens of other completely unrelated products people like to talk about in the comments really don’t belong here.

If my sister had a blog, that’d be the place

  30. Suzanne of Designated Editor says:

Thanks so much y’all! I appreciate the feedback … new look should be arriving this week … can’t wait!

  31. It is true that how many times you are commenting in a blog not a major factor, but how are you commenting, that is an important part.

    • Indeed, always is better to comment specifically about the subject that’s being discussed … the more thought the more meaning, no? Thanks for taking the time to comment! -Suzanne

  32. As here described the local listing: Google Maps – Local extensions released recently, improvements and beta tests within local Mobile, can target by device and carrier.I need some more explanation.

    • Hi and thanks for asking (sorry about the delay, too) …

The short answer: It’s a segmentation tool.

Here in the US there are several major mobile carriers (the companies that connect your phone so you can make calls, browse, text etc). I have Verizon, and since iPhone is not available on Verizon, I have a Droid.

If a business owner wants to use Google’s service, he could target iPhone users, or Droid users who are with Verizon. Or all Verizon users.

      This is important because:
Not everyone has a smartphone with access to the Internet. Maybe the business owner wants people who are familiar with apps. Standard mobile phone users may not have used an app before. Or maybe the merchant wants to engage with people via SMS text and cut out app users, that’d be another way to segment.

Do let me know if additional clarification would be helpful … the goal is to provide information and to helpful & I very much appreciate feedback and knowing more about how I can help!

      Thanks again,
      Suzanne

  33. An important note. Just using nofollow doesn’t protect those other pages from being indexed. So if you don’t want them indexed, you need to make use of a meta noindex tag or robots.txt text to specifically block them.

    • Hi and thanks for sharing that important detail … the tech aspect is not my strong-suit, so I greatly appreciate and encourage such helpful contributions like yours.

      Thanks again!
      Suzanne

  34. Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of search engine optimization, paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.

    • Hi and thanks so much for adding your insights for the SEM discussion … was just thinking about it again the other day.

The whole concept of search as it relates to search engines — or what is specifically considered a search engine — is all about to change, no? YouTube is #2, between Google & Yahoo/Bing. How much longer until Facebook rises into the top rankings?

Thanks again for taking the time to comment!
      Suzanne

  35. Turning business success and expertise into second half significance – without abandoning either.. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time.

  36. Thanks for taking the time to post … just wondering what you mean by “second-half significance” … would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again! -Suzanne

  37. Hi and thanks for such a great comment … just wondering what you have found most helpful? It’ll help guide future content & you know help is always appreciated 🙂
    Thanks again,
    Suzanne

  38. I thought your post was cool and will visit often.

  39. Great post. Very refreshing given all the duplicate content out there. Thanks for doing something original.

  40. I am fascinated by the opportunity that blogs provide to connect readers with authors. Before a few years ago, if I thoroughly enjoyed a book, there was nothing to do except wait for that author to write another book. Now, I search for the blogs related to books I liked and I am able to not only see material beyond what was in the book, but also publicly comment on their thoughts and research. This is too good of an experience to pass up.

  43. optimization for social media is part of SEO, so there is no particular answer to your question. You can use social media for driving traffic to your page. As many people see the link it`s more likely that they will click and visit.

  44. Considerably, the post is actually the best on this notable topic.
I harmonize with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your future updates.
I will at once grab your rss feed to stay privy of any updates. Authentic work and much success in your business endeavors!
